What’s it like shaking a former president’s hand? I didn’t feel electrified, my hair didn’t stand on end. It was merely the brief meeting of hands in an expression that Americans use everyday. My mother asked me what his handshake was like. If it was strong or weak, warm or cold, rough or soft. I thought about it, but I couldn’t tell her. It was so brief, no more than a few seconds—and yet it was probably the single most meaningful handshake of my life. In that brief moment, shaking President William “Bill” Clinton’s hand let me touch history. I touched the white house, airforce 1, the oval office—I came in contact with a member of the most exclusive club in the country; a club that plays host to less than 50 members dotted throughout history, most of them having already passed away. It’s like plunging your hand into the most significant events in American history, and in that instant, you’re a part of it.
He’ll never remember the girl in the green jacket that shook his hand in the Phoenixville Area High School gymnasium on April 15, 2008.
But I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.
